Who are you, when there’s no one there to see?
Society has norms, rules and expectations. To belong means to fit in, to blend with the all the rest. Don’t stand up, don’t stand out, don’t dare to be yourself, not entirely, not by choice.
And when you must, stand up, stand out, stand with others just like you. No one special in a world that doesn’t see. Suffocate in silence, please don’t rock the boat.
Slip into your politically correct disguise, adjust your mask, and assume the expected expression. Anger, outrage, frustration; acceptance, approval and support – do we really get to choose?
‘What’ replaces ‘who’, that’s all the world is wanting. What do you do, what do you contribute, what do you bring to the party? An upstanding member of the community, a tax payer, a doctor, lawyer, dentist or…..
Always ‘what’ and never ‘who’.
I want to see below the surface, beneath the settled dust. What makes your heart sing, and what lives in your dreams? Whare’s your happy, where’s your peace? Do you hate, love or cry, when at night you close the door? What would your ‘special’ be, if you had the chance to choose? Perhaps you do, perhaps you have, perhaps, but do you fit? Do you care? Do you dare to be someone else instead?
Who are you when you let yourself be free?
